Are Your Prizes as Sustainable as They Seem? Lessons from Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy
Neil Mandel
The Netflix documentary Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy pulls no punches in exposing the darker side of consumerism. It dives into how brands and marketers drive demand, often at the expense of ethics and sustainability. From claims about recyclable packaging to the rapid turnover of high-tech gadgets that end up discarded in landfills, the programme shines a light on the uncomfortable truths behind many "must-have" items.
As someone in the promotional marketing world, it made me think beyond the obvious. While the documentary's focus was often on disposable consumer goods like phones and other tech, there’s a parallel to be drawn with the prizes we offer in promotional campaigns. Are they really as sustainable or valuable as we claim? Or are we, too, contributing to the cycle of disposable culture?
Promotional Prizes: More Than a Quick Win?
In promotional marketing, prizes are often the star attraction—the hook that gets consumers excited and engaged. But as consumer awareness around sustainability grows, so too does the scrutiny of what we offer. The days of prizes being purely about flash and instant gratification are fading. Instead, we’re being challenged to think about the long-term impact of the rewards we put forward. Some key questions to ask:- Durability and Longevity: Are the prizes we offer built to last, or will they become obsolete or break within a few years? (Think high-tech gadgets that are outdated within months.)
- Sustainable Production: Are prizes sourced responsibly, and do they minimise environmental harm in their production?
- End-of-Life Impact: Can the prize be recycled or reused, or is it destined for landfill?
The Case for Thoughtful Prizes
A truly sustainable prize not only delights the winner but aligns with the values of both the brand and the audience. Examples include:- Experiential Prizes: Instead of physical goods, offer experiences—like a vineyard tour, eco-friendly travel, or classes that create lasting memories without material waste.
- Ethical Products: When offering items, ensure they come from brands with verifiable sustainability credentials, like fair trade, organic, or recycled materials.
- Precycled and Practical Rewards: Focus on prizes that serve a functional purpose and won’t end up as clutter. A high-quality reusable water bottle or energy-efficient tech can leave a lasting impression.
